Massive inequality still persists in South Africa.
Inkululeko is a Xhosa word that means freedom The goal of Inkululeko is to transform the lives of young people via education.
The leaders of Inkululeko are community based.
Inkululeko is an after school program, not a school replacement program. They offer tutoring, academic support and nutrition programs. Their most important goal is to work with students to give them more agency and allow them to recognize the power of their own voice.
They are working to bridge the gaps in the socio-economic divide without competing with the schools.
Youth development is vital to community development.
Program: Made in Makanda
Members of the community work with Inkululeko to sell handmade products in the US.
The relationship between Makanda and the US has been vital to the work of Inkululeko.
They have worked with Syracuse University since before the organization launched. They run a study abroad program which brings students from Syracuse to South Africa. This brings in both financial resources and human capital.
They have ensured this program is sustainable and South African driven while being American supported. This ensures that the program is sustainable after they leave.
Jason has worked with a number of Rotary clubs in order to further the goals of the organization.
One of their biggest current needs is providing wireless internet in a school that currently does not have wireless internet. This is a critical need, especially during the current era. They also need tablets and laptops at their satellite branch.
They are celebrating their 10th anniversary this year!
Leah will be sending out the links that Jason shared this morning.
